At the Canadian Equine Therapy Institute, we are dedicated to Treating the Whole Horse. Founded with a clear purpose: to empower practitioners and enthusiasts alike to go beyond symptom-based care and embrace a comprehensive, holistic approach to equine wellbeing.
Whether your horse is a treasured companion, a working partner, or an elite athlete, our mission is to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and mindset to support optimal health, performance and longevity. We believe that true care means addressing not just gentle massage or surface-level therapy—but digging into anatomy, biomechanics, organ function, tissue repair, and even the emotional & physiological integration that defines a healthy, resilient equine.
At the Canadian Equine Therapy Institute, we provide a comprehensive education for those who want to understand the horse from the inside out. Our programs give you the knowledge and hands-on skills to support the whole horse—physically, neurologically, emotionally and functionally.
A multi-module, in-depth curriculum covering anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nervous system, lymphatics, massage therapy, movement correction, rehabilitation, herbal medicine, and more.

Students attend “classroom sessions” every second month for five consecutive days. Testing takes place on the first day back after each break between modules. Homework and practical, hands-on case studies are assigned at the end of each module for completion before the next session.
This depends on your learning style. Some students may need more time for studying, while others focus on practical assignments. Expect to dedicate 10–20 hours per module to practical, hands-on tasks, depending on your approach.
Unfortunately, no. As a private course, students are not eligible for government financial assistance
Our in-person practical sessions are held near Edmonton Airport.
For the safety and privacy of our students attending in-person sessions, we’ll only disclose the exact location once they’ve officially started the course.

Yes! We welcome international students from all over the world. Our online and hybrid programs are designed to be accessible globally, and many of our students study from outside Canada. You can complete the online modules from anywhere, and if your program includes in-person practicals, we will provide guidance on travel planning and attendance requirements.
A great ERT should have a strong desire to help horses and enjoy solving the “puzzle” each horse presents. While each therapist brings a unique perspective to the role, a shared passion for equine care is essential. Currently, Shantel is the only ERT.
Absolutely not! ERTs work alongside veterinarians, complementing their medical expertise with rehabilitative and restorative care. Collaboration is key to achieving the best outcomes for horses.
An Equine Remedial Therapist assesses individual equine clients and provides tailored rehabilitative or restorative care. This may include therapies like osteopathy, chiropractic techniques, or massage. ERTs typically travel to various locations to build their client base, making each day unique.
As self-employed professionals, ERTs’ income depends on their effort, experience, and client base. Fees for horse treatments range from $50 to $250 per session, influenced by reputation and demand.
